A peek at Robin's Life

Born in Alexandria, Ontario, Canada in 1975, Robin moved to Ottawa at the age of 10 and attended Lisgar Collegiate Institute's gifted program.  After high school, Robin completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree

in Biology and Biotechnology from Dr. James Cheetham's lab at Carleton University and a Master of Business Administration from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.  Robin is a Chartered Manager (F.CIM) pursuing his PhD in Finance from Walden University and is a staunch supporter of fundamental analysis and valuation.  I have written a comprehensive review of my experience with Walden University so far and would strongly recommend Walden University to practitioners wishing to pursue a doctoral degree while remaining socially- and academically-relevant; while many PhDs are often criticized for being too focused on esoteric theoretical concepts out of touch with the real world, Walden's scholar-practitioner model strongly encourages students to refine their goals and research applications and interests throughout their doctoral studies.  Robin is a peer reviewer for the Academy of Management .  Now divorced, Robin has a loving daughter, Kaitlain Rita Lai Yee Cheung, born July 6, 2003.

I just attended my second PhD academic residency , this time held at the Sheraton Dallas, from January 16 to 23, 2010.  Please see my Walden Residency Photo Album  for daily updates!  Spring Quarter 2010 is beginning in a couple of weeks!  See the Walden University 2009-2010 Academic Calendar   for details!

I'm an avid cuber, though not a typical "speed-cuber."  Rather than trying to obtain the fastest times solving the

Rubiks cube by memorizing a large repertoire of special cases, I rather use my understanding of how cubelets behave between (n-2)-, (n-1)-, (n+1)-, and n-layered cubes and inductively abstract generalizations; just as Chess is an exercise in strategy, I find cubing an exercise in reasoning, free of complications and loopholes that traditional situational logic problems present to critical thinkers.

I'll try put together a site on cubing when I have time, but for now, I'm the guy you pass by on the street or waiting in a bank line solving my cubes, from 2x2x2 to 7x7x7 V-Cubes.  That said, traditionally I have used the Fridrich  method for solving 3x3 Rubiks cubes and the reduction method (solving centres, edge-pairing, correcting parity errors, then solving as a 3x3) for higher-order cubes, such as the 4x4, 5x5, 6x6, and 7x7 cubes; however, I am also a student of the Petrus  and ZZ  methods.  While Fridrich is a layer-by-layer method, requiring what has already been solved to be disrupted and reset at each step, Petrus and ZZ are block-building methods that attempt to keep entire faces free to rotate as long as possible.

DJ, Classicaly-trained Pianist and Violinist

Originally trained as a classical pianist and violinist for over 20 years, Robin now performs as a
club and rave DJ.  While he has been heard spinning various forms of house, techno, trance, and drum and bass, he currently specializes in harmonic mixing of the uniquely gritty energies of Electro House using a combination of tracks pressed on vinyl records and digital audio tracks mapped in real-time by computer onto m-audio's torq timecoded vinyl records using Vestax PDX-2000 direct-drive turntables, Stanton Trackmaster cartridges, and Stanton RM-3 mixer.  He also spins oldschool happy hardcore, uplifting and hard trance, and various other forms of electronic dance music (EDM). Check out some of his full mixes in mp3 format using the streaming widget on the right or at the Music link.  Robin has been a CSPA-licenced skydiver since 1995, currently enjoys golf and snowboarding, and is a student of both Wing Chun and Wu Shu at Sunny Tang in Toronto.
